A trader earned a substantial sum on the ouster of Venezuela's president just before it was made public, leading to inquiries about the possibility of profiting from confidential information of the event.
Sudden Shift in Wagers
Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a crypto-powered platform, that Nicolás Maduro would be out of power by the month's conclusion rose in the period preceding former President Trump declared on the weekend that the Venezuelan leader had been seized.
A particular user, which joined the platform last month and made four bets, all on political events in Venezuela, made more than $436K from a modest bet of $32.5K.
Who placed the bet is a mystery. The user had only a blockchain identifier for identification.
Market Signals Before Public Statement
Trading information shows that participants put the odds of the president's removal at just a low 6.5 percent in the midday period of Friday, January 2nd.
But the odds had climbed to 11% by late Friday night and surged in the morning of January 3rd, indicating a sharp shift in positions just before the public announcement was made.
"That trade has all the hallmarks of a bet based on non-public details," said a financial reform advocate.
A handful of other individuals also profited tens of thousands of dollars from similar wagers.
Regulatory Scrutiny Emerges
Elected officials are growing concerned.
Proposed legislation presented on Monday seeks to ban federal workers from participating on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a wager.

Event-driven betting sites have become increasingly popular in recent years, with participants able to bet on everything from sports outcomes to political events.
The industry were examined under the previous administration. However it has found a more favorable environment during the Trump presidency.
Trading on insider information is a crime in the traditional financial markets, but there are fewer regulations in the prediction market space.
A spokesperson for another major platform said their site "explicitly prohibits insider trading of any form."
