Brian Eno Urges Support to Send Palestinian Solidarity Song to UK Christmas No 1.
A campaign is aiming to send a traditional song from Palestine to the Christmas number one spot. The project seeks to send support to people in Gaza while also spotlighting Palestinian cultural expression.
A Chance for Support and an "Unlikely Coup"
Musician and artist Brian Eno, who contributes to the track, stated that the release called 'Lullaby' represents a moment to support Palestinians over the Christmas period. He noted the potential for an unlikely festive coup.
“That would be amazing if that happened, yes,” he said. “I wouldn't be completely disheartened if it doesn’t, Christmas singles are a thing unto themselves.”
Powerful Theme of Freedom and Dignity
Palestinian singer Nai Barghouti, who sings on the reimagining of a cultural piece called Yamma Mwel El Hawa, explained the song's powerful central theme.
“It has a profound significance for many individuals,” Barghouti shared. “It’s basically saying that I would choose to perish with honor than exist without freedom. That’s the main theme of the song; we want to live a respectful existence that we merit as a people.”
Recording Origins and Contributing Musicians
The song was recorded following a solidarity show held in the autumn. Originally intended to be captured during the live event, the rendition was shelved during the concert due to time constraints.
The impressive roster of musicians appearing on Lullaby features a group of prominent voices from the music world. All were part of the benefit event, which reportedly raised a significant sum for charitable causes.
Production and Release
Lullaby was crafted by a group of music creators. The single showcases a combination of the original Arabic with contemporary English verses.
The team running the project have clarified that their objective is to generate maximum funds for a specific fund. These donations will be distributed to initiatives supporting Palestinians through an established charity.
“We haven't set a specific target,” a representative explained. “We’ll go for as much as possible. Obviously, the higher the total, the greater the impact. It all goes out to those in need in Gaza.”
The situation in the region was described as its widespread damage, with a overwhelming percentage of infrastructure said to be in ruins or severely impacted.
“Against that backdrop, a few million is unlikely to make a massive dent. But I think what does make a difference is above all raising awareness for this issue and demonstrating the human dimension of the story.”
The track is scheduled for release this Friday. Additionally, a video of the solidarity show will be made ready to watch on a popular streaming site from mid-December.
