Throughout his initial presidency, analysts often suggested that Donald Trump's statements should be taken seriously instead of word for word. However, subsequent events indicate that this approach may have got it backwards.

A recently unveiled U.S. National Security Strategy alongside a series of statements from administration officials, presidential allies, and the former president have sparked what could be one of the most severe crises for Atlanticism, the security framework that has sustained peace and democracy in Europe since 1945.

From Burden-Sharing to Cultural Anxiety

While Trump's earlier complaint focused on Europe's perceived refusal to fund its own security, his vision has now embraced a far more alarming perspective.

Tinged with racism and a deep-seated contempt for Europe's political institutions and officials, he has spoken about the risk of societal collapse on a continent he has rarely visited and mostly viewed from a distance.

"His recent interview lacking in a consistent philosophy is nevertheless full of something else: the muddled anxiety of an ageing white man confronted with demographic shifts."

This paranoid worldview, which has already influenced harsh U.S. immigration and law enforcement approaches, now appears to be shaping Washington's prism of Europe.

The Racist Core

According to this logic, immigration from developing nations causes a weakening of European countries, making them "weak" under "stupid" leaders and paving the way for their demise. It constitutes an openly xenophobic ideology, with Trump and his circle making clear their support for far-right movements across Europe.

While the broader theme of this race-baiting is familiar, its specific implications for European security are essential to grasp.

For Trump and his Maga acolytes—a group that includes tech magnate Elon Musk, who recently advocated for the dissolution of the European Union—all politics is fundamentally a deal. However, while the previous argument was about financial fairness, the new claim is that a decadent Europe is fundamentally unworthy because of its embrace of multiculturalism.

Weakening from Within

During the conversation, Trump himself connects these ideas in a kind of wish-fulfillment exercise. He acknowledges that the Kremlin desires a divided Europe. Trump proclaims Europe to be weak, and in exposing the fissures in Washington and European capitals, he inadvertently aids Putin by actively undermining European unity—while simultaneously claiming it's not his "fault".

This dynamic is playing out at possibly the most critical moment for Europe in decades, with a devastating war in Ukraine and escalating provocations elsewhere on the continent.

While Europe draw closer to Kyiv amid continuing warnings of American abandonment, the peril is that Trump has constructed a rationale for not listening to his allies.

Reactions from Allies

These developments demands a robust reaction from capitals across Europe. Although certain figures, including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, have been forceful in their pushback, others—like British officials—have continued with a policy of attempting to appease the U.S. administration.

Recently, a Downing Street spokesperson refused to push back on Trump's comments about Europe or his renewed attack on London Mayor Sadiq Khan.

The spokesperson stated, "He has a productive partnership with the American leader and a good working relationship with the London mayor, and is committed to working with both to deliver stronger results for the British public."

The undeniable truth is that Trump means his words and repeats them consistently. It is past time to stop pretending that things are different.
