Michael Jordan Tells Court He ‘Wasn’t Afraid’ of Nascar in Legal Battle
The basketball icon, introducing himself formally in a federal courtroom on Friday, stated that his competitive side and novelty within the sport emboldened his effort with 23XI Racing to “challenge” Nascar over alleged violations of antitrust rules.
Team Investment and a Will to Win
The owner disclosed operational insights of his 23XI team, saying he invested $40 million of his personal wealth into the Nascar Cup series team launched with partner Polk and longtime driver Denny Hamlin.
“Someone had to step forward,” Jordan stated during testimony. “I was a new person, I wasn’t afraid. I believed I could take on Nascar in its entirety. From my perspective, the sport required examination through a new lens.”
The Core Dispute: Charter Agreements and Contract Pressure
At issue is the expiration of a 2016 agreement where Nascar provided each team a franchise. The concept is similar to other professional sports with independent franchises, such as the NBA’s Hornets or the NFL’s Panthers. This deal was set to expire in 2024 when Nascar insisted on charter membership renewals.
Jordan was on the witness stand for about sixty minutes and left the court to a media frenzy, with fans and media clamoring for a view or a picture of the global icon.
Spearheading the Fight
Jordan’s 23XI is at the forefront of the push along with another racing team for Nascar to change a operating model Jordan said is breaking the law to maintain excessive control.
