Weather experts are reporting an icy commencement to the new year, with snow expected over large parts of the UK. Celebrants are advised to dress warmly as near-freezing temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Festive Events Continue Despite Forecasts

Edinburgh's renowned Hogmanay events are set to proceed, following last year's cancellation. This is in spite of yellow warnings for snow in northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve night for those partying, so additional clothing will be needed," said the weather service.

Fireworks Under Clear but Frosty Skies

In other parts of the UK, the weather is likely to be perfect for fireworks shows, with no rain and good visibility. The mercury are expected to be low, making extra layers a necessity, said forecasters.

To the north, skies will be cloudier, but this is not expected to affect visibility for viewing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.

Widespread Snow Warnings for Friday

Moving into Friday, advisories are active across Northern Ireland and from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and most of the south-east of England.

• People should to allow extra time for trips on the road.
• Hold-ups and call-offs are expected on the transport network.

The Mercury Expected to Drop Further

With the start of 2026, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are expected to drop further as snow and gale-force winds are likely to affect the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow could accumulate to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.

Medical Advisories Issued

At the same time, amber-level health advisories have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to continue until noon on 5 January, with readings expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency explained this meant the weather was likely to cause notable consequences across health and social care services. This encompasses a expected uptick in the fatality numbers among vulnerable individuals or those aged 65 or over.

The guidance for all is clear: to celebrate the new year in security, dressing for the cold is utterly key.
