New York Launches Online Platform for Citizens to Report Immigration Images Following Detentions of Four American Citizens
The state attorney general has introduced a fresh online portal asking residents to provide images and footage of ICE operations across the state. This action comes just a day after a major enforcement action rattled Manhattan's Chinatown, triggering mass demonstrations.
American Citizens Held During Raid
A congressional representative disclosed during a news conference that four citizens were detained and held for "about 24 hours" following Tuesday's raid. Protests erupted in New York on both Tuesday and Wednesday.
"Every New Yorker has the right to live without fear," state officials declared in a announcement.
"For those who saw and documented ICE activity recently, I ask you to share that evidence with my office. We are committed to assessing these accounts and investigating any wrongdoings."
Portal Features
The platform offers spaces to send images and video footage of the incident, as well as a field to note geographic details. Prior to sending, submitters must check a checkbox that states that "the office may use any materials, images, or footage in a official report, such as in a court case or official statement."
Information about the Chinatown Raid
The enforcement action, which witnesses say involved more than 50 federal agents, happened in a well-known neighborhood of the city where counterfeit products and merchandise are commonly traded en masse – often to tourists.
Recordings of Tuesday's raid depict numerous masked and armed officers restraining and arresting a person, and pushing back witnesses. Throngs of locals followed the agents down the sidewalks. An military-style transport was also seen rolling through the urban roads.
Political Response
During a midweek briefing held with the New York immigrant rights coalition, congressman Dan Goldman, a Democrat, announced that four American citizens were arrested by immigration for nearly 24 hours and that there were "no situations where nationals should be arrested for without cause." He said the persons were let go on Wednesday with no legal action taken.
"The goal is evident here. It is not to take criminals off the street," he stated. "This is a military-style operation to create conflict. It is purely a justification to generate turmoil for federal officials to deploy the military to stop violence that they themselves caused."
Extensive Outcry
Anger over the federal action rapidly grew – all three NYC mayor hopefuls denounced the raid, along with the state leader.
"Once again, the Trump administration chooses authoritarian theatrics that generate terror, not safety. It has to end," one mayoral candidate declared.
The city's immigrant rights groups spoke out also.
"ICE targeted Manhattan's Chinatown with military-style vehicles, hooded officers and riot gear to go after small merchants attempting to earn income. This raid had nothing to do with citizen protection and was entirely about terrorizing immigrant families and areas," said the president of a major immigrant coalition.
Official Guidelines
Agency rules forbids the arrest of American nationals and the bureau has claimed it refrains from arrest or detain American nationals. Yet, external research has revealed that numerous citizens have been held against their will by ICE during the period of the existing leadership.
Current Situation
Enforcement actions have been becoming more common in the state and across the US this year.
A recent action in the city center was the initial documented operation on an refuge facility of the present government. Demonstrations against ICE are ubiquitous as are accusations of aggression and abusive practices.
Recently, a letter provided by legal entities stated inadequate care of women with child in ICE facilities.
