Stupidity and Monarchical Hubris Ruined Andrew, and It Could Continue Yet
This episode commenced with a solitary photograph, arguably the most consequential ever captured of a royal family member.
There stood the Earl of Inverness, arm-in-arm a female youth, while an associate grinned suggestively in the rear.
Lacking that snapshot, taken at a social event in 2001, who would have believed the claims of a adolescent who declared she was transported across the Atlantic and compelled to have brief relations with a individual of the royal family?
An odd, telling gesture by someone who had overtly claimed to have no been aware of her, said he could not have had sex with her, and yet handed over a large amount of his mother's money to resolve a drawn-out lawsuit.
A Long Period of Controversy
In this context, conversations of the royals acting firmly to distance themselves from Andrew are misguided. This scandal has persisted for the largest portion of 15 years since that image, and a further snapshot of Andrew ambling pleasantly with a disgraced financier emerged.
- Arrogance: How long did his family members, perhaps even his mother and father, know that Andrew was so arrogant?
- Dubious Friendships: They must have known, if his aides and the law enforcement were performing their duties, that he had some extremely unsavory associates given he publicly welcomed them to estates.
- Monetary Excess: If the family did not know about his intimate behaviors, they certainly knew about his overspending with state resources.
Trips were printed in royal annual reports: chopper flights from the royal residence to a country club and back again in time for midday meal, exclusive air travel instead of regular transport, all for the convenience of "Airmiles Andy".
A Life of Privilege
Then there was the entitlement which expected subservience when he entered a space or the supreme obsession about his honorifics used on his official documents in messages to his associates.
He managed to escape consequences while his matriarch, who strangely pampered him, was still living. The monarch did at least revoke him of public duties and ceremonial ranks in the aftermath of his catastrophic and, as revealed, mendacious television interview six years ago.
Recent Developments
Merely in the last two weeks that events accelerated, following the release of books giving more troubling details of his behavior and that of his companions.
More information have again revealed Andrew's thinking that he could avoid being untruthful about his relationship with a notorious figure.
Society (and the media) were far more perceptive of the monarchy. There was not a single person of any consequence to speak up for him, a result of all those years of hubris.
Monarchical Concerns
The more astute royals realized that. The primary concern is to transfer the crown, if not as before at least whole and unstained.
Over time the last 190 years trying to undo the reputation of previous monarchs, showing they are valuable, responsible and attentive to their subjects.
Andrew was putting all that in peril in an era when respect and secrecy is no longer sufficient.
The Fallout
Ultimately, the well-known indecisive king was pressured more. There was no alternative. The palace had surrendered command of the account.
Now it is the removal of designations and the persistent and life-long social disgrace that will afflict Andrew most severely.
- Reduction: Reduced to just Mr Mountbatten-Windsor
- Historical Precedent: The first member to forfeit his honorifics in modern times
- Armed Forces: Notably hurtful given his service in the Falklands war
He remains a counsellor of state, on paper able to act for the sovereign, and he is still in the succession to the monarchy, but none of these will actually come to pass.
Future Prospects
Do individuals he comes across still show respect to him? Will they still slip up and call him Prince? Will they even say Andrew,
Naturally, he is not withdrawing to a common area, but to the royal family's vast property at a monarchical property.
At that location, he will be provided by the monarch with one of the estate properties and given some type of personal stipend.
This is not his former home, where he paid a nominal rent for more than 20 years, and the county is a bit distant, but even so it may not be sufficiently removed.
Pending Matters
This is not over. There are still records in the possession of US Congress to be revealed.
- Governmental Scrutiny: Might legislators demand more
- Monetary Probe: Or investigate the improper use of public money
- Criminal Investigation: There may even be a police investigation into his conduct
Maybe for the time being the reputational impact to the institution is limited. The narrative from the institution was evidently that the removal of designations was what the sovereign, and especially other senior royals, sought.
A Shift in Position
An end to deception that Andrew was making the choice himself. And, remarkably, the short statement showed plainly that the institution were aligning with the accuser's account of events.
Furthermore, for the first time they eventually showed consideration for the affected individuals: "The measures are considered essential, regardless of the fact that he maintains his innocence of the claims against him."
In the end it is presumption, selfishness and inactivity that will undermine the crown. In his stupidity, self-gratification and venality, Andrew appears never to have learned that lesson.
