The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Discloses He Has a Plan for How The Apple TV+ Show Might Finish... For Now.

The acclaimed writer-producer did not foresee that his new science-fiction series would emerge as a breakout success. “God bless the fans,” he states. “I did not foresee the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”

With the first season of the popular series wrapping up—and a second season greenlit and underway—the creative team opened up about the fan response and whether it will impact the storyline of Pluribus.

Regarding the Tremendous Viewer Reception

One could easily to get distracted by the rampant praise and audience predictions about Pluribus. The creator is striving to ignore the noise.

“The experience is akin to constantly eating your favorite dessert and being tickled to death,” he describes. “It's wonderful, but I get wind of it from others, and that's by design. Not once have I looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever plan to. It's quite the opposite. It's a bottomless pit I know I would disappear down and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”

In spite of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s it's impossible to ignore the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The most practical strategy is to take it in stride and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.

“We don't try to adjust our writing,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not impacted by what people are saying.”

“We prefer to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan concludes.

The Big Question: Does the showrunner Know the Finale of Pluribus?

Considering the writers aren’t being guided by audience theories, can we assume they already know how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? The answer is yes… in a way.

“There are some interesting ideas about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan reveals. “yet we stand ready to discard a decent plan for a more brilliant plan. This approach has served us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we conceive of something superior and I suspect we'll be doing that.”

Alternatively, if they hit a wall, executive producer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to serve as a last resort.

“I constantly suggest that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and the characters are inside it,” Smith quips, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”

Then again, one could always use the legendary finales?

“My dream is Carol to awaken beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.

Pluribus is currently available on Apple TV+.
