The Creators of Baldur's Gate 3 Clarifies Its Implementation of AI Tools for Next Project

The developer behind acclaimed titles like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin recently unveiled its new project, generating significant hype within the player base. However, follow-up remarks from the studio's co-founder have added nuance to the discussion, focusing on the developer's approach toward generative artificial intelligence.

Augmenting Workflows, Not Cutting Jobs

In a latest statement, Larian's director outlined that the team is utilizing generative AI for particular ancillary functions. These encompass developing pitch decks, creating initial concept art, and drafting placeholder dialogue.

Importantly, Vincke made clear that the final assets in the game will be crafted solely by actual artists. "We are developing all the content ourselves," he said.

We are constantly expanding our roster of storytellers and are actively assembling writing teams.

Given that this area is being particularly called out — we currently have over twenty concept artists and have job openings for additional creatives.

Each initiative we do is additive and focused on having people spend greater focus on actual creation.

"Our team utilizes machine learning to gather inspiration, similar to we use Google and reference books," he stated. "During the very early ideation stages we use it as a simple sketch for structure which we then replace with hand-crafted artwork."

He added, "Larian brings on creatives for their inherent skill, not for their willingness to follow what a AI generates."

Key Areas of AI Integration

Vincke had earlier broken down the studio's practical approach to machine learning, defining its use into primary functions:

  • Automation of Tedious Tasks: This encompasses refining animations, dialogue cleanup, and technical processes like adapting animations for different models.
  • Fast-Tracked Experimentation: Using tools to quickly build rough mock-ups of mechanics to experiment with concepts before full production.
  • Long-Term Aspirations: Researching how machine learning could in the future create innovative player agency, specifically in creating unforeseen permutations in a complex RPG.

He explicitly affirmed that core creative disciplines — including visual art — are not areas where the team is reducing human talent. Conversely, Larian is actively hiring in these precise fields.

"Our studio is not shipping a game with machine-made assets, nor considering reducing creatives to swap them out with AI," Vincke summarized.
