The Details Known Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

A minimum of 16 lives were killed and over 40 sustained injuries when assailants fired on a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an incident local authorities are describing as a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, officials have confirmed the number of fatalities stands at 16, which includes one of the suspected gunmen. Furthermore, 42 injured people were transported to medical facilities.

The deceased are yet to be officially identified, but police believe their ages span between 10 and 87 years old.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he was the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the events before the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting began. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having faced immense hardship in their youth. They had later relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister declared that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the message continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was among those killed in the incident, according to reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospital, many remain under care, with five in critical condition. The injured comprise two officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the attackers. Described as a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He said he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
