The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Famed for Styling David Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Antony Price, the influential UK-based designer behind many legendary styles favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has passed away at the age of 80.
Price was best known for his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, most notably the pastel suits that appeared in the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "their hit Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance online."
His passing follows shortly after he presented his latest collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. The performer Lily Allen walked in a dress inspired by the famous black velvet "revenge dress" made famous by the late Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price moved to London during the sixties to attend the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he began designing men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that Sir Mick Jagger wore during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show opened with outfits on supermodel Jerry Hall, who also wore the wedding dress Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A frequent collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to merge elements of men's and women's fashion along with his expert craftsmanship in crafting body-hugging looks cemented his status as a "genuine original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he started creating outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, such as various looks for her tour of the United States following her marriage.
Following a profession lasting half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London just last month in partnership with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
- Sculpted Silhouettes: A hallmark of his work.
- Theatrical Flair: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
- Genre-Blending Design: Merging menswear with womenswear.
- A Client List from Rock to Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.
The fashion world mourns the loss to a true visionary whose influence on style and culture remains deeply ingrained.
