Israelis have come together across the country to mark 24 months since the Hamas-conducted assault on that fateful day in October 2023, as negotiations proceeded in Egypt over a resolution to the hostilities in Gaza.

The assault led to more than 1,200 people killed and 251 others captured back to Gaza as captives. It was the most most lethal day for the Jewish community since the Second World War.

Israel answered by beginning a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, as reported by the area's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its numbers are regarded as accurate by the United Nations and other global organizations.

"The bloodthirsty adversaries have struck forcefully, but they have not defeated us," Benjamin Netanyahu added on Tuesday.

He also pledged to "realize all the aims of the war: the release of all the abducted, the removal of the Hamas administration and the promise that Gaza will not present a danger to Israel".

Remembrance Ceremonies Across Israel

The Israeli government postponed official memorials until October 16th - after the end of the religious holiday season - but ceremonies still took place throughout the country on that day.

A memorial ceremony for the loved ones of Israelis who died in the Hamas incident was held in Tel Aviv. Put together by the victims' relatives, it was aired across Israeli TV networks.

Some time earlier, a silent tribute was respected across the country.

Negotiation Meetings in Egypt

Meanwhile, both sides' negotiating teams met in the Egyptian tourist destination of the Egyptian city for a follow-up session of mediated discussions to discuss the terms of the agreement.

A senior Palestinian official familiar with the negotiations indicated that an evening round of mediated discussions started at 7 PM local time.

The source said the earlier meeting concluded without significant progress, amid disagreements over the proposed Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over assurances Hamas wants to ensure Israel does not restart fighting after the first phase of the deal.

He added that the talks are "tough and have not yet deliver any major advancement," but mentioned that mediators are making efforts to close the disparities between the both parties.

Essential Points in Negotiations

  • A lasting truce
  • The exchange of the captives still held by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
  • The pullout of military personnel from Gaza
  • Plans for assistance distribution
  • Post-war management of the territory

Civilian Reaction

In Tel Aviv's public square that day, 29-year-old a woman - whose brother endured the incident on the Nova music festival, where hundreds were lost their lives and dozens more were taken hostage by Hamas militants - explained: "Nowhere feels like home any longer and until all the hostages return not a single person will have peace of mind."

"Once we see everyone home again, we can relax anew. Then we can begin to heal," she continued.

In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's home in Jerusalem, people gathered to express their support for the relatives of the captives. Israel states forty-eight remain in captivity in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are thought to be living.

Activist Atalia Regev stated: "We must do every compromise necessary for the hostages to return. But we really want guarantees that we will be protected."

Surveys now regularly indicate that about the majority of Israeli citizens prefer the hostilities to conclude in exchange for the freedom of the abducted.

Gaza Situation

At the site of the gathering, those paying respects came together to remember the victims.

From that location, the sound of military attacks and explosions could be noticed just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where local people indicated the intense Israeli shelling persisted.

In the main city, attacks were reported in the morning of that day in the west side Tal al-Hawa, Rimal and locality neighbourhoods and in the east side district of the community, as well the settlement to the northwest.

"When the evening comes, the dread arrives with it," displaced urban resident a mother, whose 17-year-old son was killed by an Israeli bombing last year, described.

"We are fearful of the air strikes. Throughout the evening we are sleeping together, embracing, especially my youngest child who puts his face on me all night."

"Continuously we look at the reports to see the situation. And I'm afraid that this truce will not be finalized and that the conflict will return to us."

Medical Emergency

The medical facility in Gaza City reported it had taken in the bodies of several people by the afternoon, including a trio killed in an Israeli strike in the south part area.

A different healthcare center in the southern urban center of the city indicated additional victims had been delivered. An individual was died by Israeli soldiers while seeking aid to the south, medical staff stated.
