The Reason Real Madrid Have 'Total Trust' in Youngster Pitarch

The young midfielder playing
Thiago Pitarch has played seven matches for the Spanish giants, including five starts.

When an teenage creates Real Madrid history in a pivotal Champions League match against Manchester City, it inevitably draws praise and the spotlight.

During his maiden start in the competition - and fifth appearance for the team - the young midfielder suitably impressed as the 15-time Champions League winners secured a three-nil last-16 first leg lead at the Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also had his club debut in the play-off round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then assisted Los Blancos defeat the English champions in Tuesday's return to secure a last eight berth.

Aged 18 years and 226 days, the midfielder became the club's youngest player to begin two matches in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing star Vinicius Jr's previous mark by a week and a half.

Rapid Ascent Through La Fabrica

The midfielder is the most recent to come through from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of the manager's most promising protegees.

He joined Madrid from Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe youth teams, and starting out for the Juvenil C team, where he rapidly created a strong impression.

He progressed to the reserve side and it was during a pre-season game in which they faced the senior squad, then coached by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who replaced the previous coach in January.

Reports would later label the moment as "love at first sight," adding he stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, character and determination he brought to the side.

'His Greatest Quality Remains His Personality'

In the summer of 2025, ex-manager Alonso invited Pitarch to train with the senior squad and awarded him playing time during the warm-up matches.

Yet, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the defining moment in his career as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in both ties against the Portuguese side that set up the clash with Manchester City.

"I have dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the first day I started playing football, every day you head to training and each day you play a match," said the player after his debut.

"I've just fulfilled my dream with the best team in the world and in the best competition."

Handed a first start in the Spanish league against his former club - where he was for four years after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the next four as injuries to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos created an opening.

The teenager has taken it with displays that have belied his youth and inexperience.

"He's a extremely fast footballer, and you can observe his capabilities," said the coach. "He's extremely energetic, with excellent endurance, effort and mobility."

The player's mindset has also stood out to his coach.

"His greatest quality is his personality," continued he. "He constantly demands the ball, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.

"I understand fans might be surprised to watch him make his debut in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had complete confidence in him to do his normal game.

"Thiago will continue to get chances with the main squad. It's a pleasure to have a talent like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Madrid region, and was raised deeply involved in the local game, moving through youth setups before joining Real Madrid's famous youth academy.

He holds dual Moroccan and Spanish nationality, giving him the choice to represent either country at the highest level.

Under Fifa eligibility rules, players may represent multiple nations at junior level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only final once they appear in a competitive senior international match.

Pitarch has played for the Spanish national team at youth level, representing both the under-19 and U20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where Spain reached the quarter-finals.

Despite this, he has not yet decided to any senior national team, who are monitoring his progress with interest.

Speaking recently, Pitarch confirmed: "I have not taken my final decision yet. My situation is positive with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a decision in the near future."

His situation echoes that of other bi-national talents such as Real team-mate Brahim Diaz and Barca star Yamal. While teenage Yamal chose Spain, Brahim opted to play for the Atlas Lions.

Eyes on the Prize

At present, his attention is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and rewarding his manager's belief.

He featured for over an hour in the 2-1 win at City, which sealed a five-one overall triumph and a quarter-final matchup with Bayern Munich.

He was replaced by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in the next generation to help the team chase trophies to come.

Following his notable contributions so far on the Champions League, Pitarch is tipped to be a central figure in that.

"The manager handles me the identical way. We handle it very normally. I try not to think about it too much - I have to earn my playing time on the field," he commented after the win at Etihad Stadium.
