A uniquely yellow-colored residential building visible behind helped us locate the video.

We are verifying images and video shared this morning that purport to show the aftermath of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive blast that authorities in Russia say fatally injured a senior military officer in Moscow.

Officials in Russia stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that detonated and that he later died of his injuries. A probe is under way.

Our starting point to verify the site from which the pictures were from was based on posts saying the blast happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the Russian capital.

We used street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to corroborate the distinctive yellow colour of a adjacent residential complex seen in the video.

Locating other structures, streetlights and the road configuration confirmed where the pictures were captured.

We also checked that the videos were new and that the visuals had not undergone manipulated.
