US Armed Forces Executes Deadly Attack in Pacific, Leading to Four Fatalities
As stated by a high-ranking defense spokesperson, the US military executed a lethal kinetic engagement on a boat in the Pacific Ocean, killing four people.
“Joint Task Force Southern Spear carried out a deadly attack on a vessel operated by a Designated Terrorist Organization in international waters. Intelligence confirmed the vessel was traveling along a established drug smuggling route and was involved in narco-trafficking operations. All four male drug traffickers were eliminated, and no American forces were harmed.”
Context and Recent Actions
The statement comes a day after a declaration regarding a blockade of all targeted oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela. That statement on social media, the American leader accused Venezuela of using oil profits to fund narcotics smuggling and other crimes, pledging to escalate the military presence.
Only on Tuesday, US defense officials said it had carried out strikes on three boats it accused of smuggling narcotics in the Pacific, killing eight people. Since 2 September, over 20 military engagements have resulted in the deaths of at least 99 people, the majority off the coast of Venezuela.
Administration Justifies Actions Amid Pressure
The administration has encountered growing pressure to release video of a 2 September vessel attack. However, officials have refused to do so. The administration has defended its efforts as a success, arguing it has prevented drugs from reaching US shores and has pushed back on concerns that it is exceeding the bounds of lawful warfare.
While the administration has said the campaign is about halting drugs destined for the US, remarks from a senior aide appeared to confirm a broader political aim. In a recent interview, the chief of staff said the president “wants to keep on blowing boats up until Venezuela's president surrenders or concedes.”
This indicates the military campaign may be linked to a strategy to oust Venezuela's sitting government.
